South Hobart vs Heidelberg United FC

Heidelberg United FC: Founded in 1958, the Heidelberg United Football Club has been an integral part of the football landscape in Victoria and instrumental in the development of the game nationally as a founding member of the National Soccer League (NSL) in 1977.  The club rose from its humble beginnings in the Victorian Metropolitan Leagues in the late 1950’s to winning the 1980 NSL Top 4 competition, a precursor to the NSL Grand Final in the years that followed.

South Hobart FC is proud to represent Tasmania in this inaugural competition. It's our last game at D’Arcy Street for the inaugural completion. We are so excited to have everyone back at home to celebrate our past 115 years, our present success and what's to come for 2026 season and our beyond and our future in Tasmania.

The Australian Championship is Football Australia’s newest national competition, bringing together historic foundation clubs and top NPL sides from across the country. It’s a stage where tradition meets ambition, and where clubs with proud histories write new chapters.

On Sunday 16th November we face one of the competition heavy-weights, and quite possibly the favourites – Heidelberg United Football Club, who have been on fire in 2025. During the 2025 Australia Cup, Heidelberg defeated three A-League teams in a row (Western Sydney Wanderers 3-0, Wellington Phoenix 4-0, Aukland FC 2-0) and reached the final on 4 October, where they faced A-League team Newcastle Jets. Newcastle defeated Heidelberg 3-1 in extra time in front of a 10,000 strong crowd at Lakeside Stadium.

Tassie contingent - For those who follow local NPL football you will know Angus Taylor - Launceston City's prolific goal scorer and equal Best and Fairest with our very own Nick Morton and Kobe Kemp this year. He has signed to Heidelberg just after the season finished and has been making his mark and playing well. We welcome him back to Tassie soil on Sunday ... but lets hope he doesn't play too well this weekend at D'Arcy St.

These Australia Championship matches aren’t just games—they’re a chance for our community to stand shoulder to shoulder, celebrate Tasmanian football, and show the nation that South Hobart belongs on the big stage. We haven't made it to finals this time but we have had the best time along the way and showed we can kick it with the mainlanders. We have made lifelong friendships and club connections that we will foster into the future.

Wear your red and blue, bring your voices, and help turn D’Arcy Street into a fortress. Together, let’s create a day of football we’ll never forget.
